Winter Holidays and the New Year

This is the time of year to gather those you love around you and be grateful.  It is the time of year for melancholy memories and joyful ones.  It is the time of year to let the pressure go and remember that this is a time of peace, love and charity not to be confused with the material hussle and bussle of Madison Avenue and the incessant selling that creates guilt and a desire to buy things that would be foolish any other time of  year.

The best gifts are those of the heart often made by hand.  I remember every hand made gift I have ever received or given and only a few of those purchased at great cost.  I have received a candle holder turned on a lathe by a friend in germany, stationery with pressed flowers picked in fields by a friend's home, cards drawn in the simple hand of a child, gifts made with shells and too much glue, gifts of food and paintings from people in my work environment.  There are too many of those precioius gifts to list; yet, this season presses on us to spend more than we should for gifts that are supposed to be a measure of our love.

Love is best measured by time spent listening, sharing and caring.  Love is best measured by its non-measure, its unconditional nature.  This is the love that holidays and new years need to memorialize:  unconditional love.  Many people find this time of year a good time to share their own good fortune with others whose lives have been more difficult.  It's a time to deliver food baskets and drop coins in the Salvation Army kettles or contribute to any other favorite charity.

Gratitude is also in order. It's the time of year to take stock of one's own gifts:  the gift of meaningful employment, the gift of health, the gift of friends, the gift of family, the gifts of home and dreams waiting to be fulfilled. It's time to look at the cup of life as half full and not half empty.  It's time to smile a little more and sing a little more and dance a little more because joy is contageous and more joy is needed in the lives of many, especially those without employment or a home of their own.

In conclusion, the holidays and the new year are a gift that we need not wear out with stress and anxiety but rather a gift to savor with gratitude and love.

VOTE

Encourage everyone you know, including program participants, to vote in this mid-term election.  Every single vote does make a difference.  In this country we have the right to vote, a right not so freely provided in many parts of the world.

There are many organizations that make voting recommendations.  Encourage everyone you know to look at the sample ballot and make informed choices for their precious votes.  Early voting is even more convenient; now is a good time to vote and be counted.

Encourage participants to contact their preferred political party headquarters if they need rides to polling places or need information about their location and hours of operation.

AARP National Conference, Orlando - September 30 - October 2, 2010

How does AARP relate to ALASS?  I found out by asking questions as a member of the Press provided access to many of the keynote presenters at the conference.  AARP is a membership organization serving people over 50 years of age.

I asked Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich  how the Republican Party Platform would benefit migrant and seasonal farmworkers and low income workers.  He responded that the first approach was through education:  providing an education system through the Internet that would provide continuity for children crossing from one state to another. The second approach was through electronic medical records that would provide a person's medical information anywhere they traveled.  My next question was whether they had a plan to improve the wages and working conditions, especially those conditions that were life threatening.  He had no information to provide.

Former U.S. Treasurer Anna Cabral and current AARP Family Finance Ambassador comes from three generations of migrant and seasonal farmworkers.  Her response to my questions included an outline of the many ways AARP is reaching out to families and providing financial basics.  This includes a Spanish web site, a Spanish publication and incorporating all family members, including children, in financial planning information and education.

U. S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius emphasized the greater number of persons who will have access to affordable health insurance and the importance of the Spanish-language site, www.CuidadodeSalud.gov to compare private health care options across the nation in a single place.  The site in English:  www.HealthCare.gov  .

The last two interviewees of the day, Chris Gardner, author of The Pursuit of Happiness (also a movie starring Will Smith) and Tom Joyner, host of the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show were simply special for the inspiration they provided from their own lives.  Chris Gardner said when he was at his worst, the help from a church that had the vision to help him find solutions to all his needs, not just one, was his turning point.  He also made the decision that he would rise above his challenges to give his son the best life possible.  He is now a successful financier who provides internships in his company that help young people improve their lives.  Tom Joyner sponsors a Foundation for students to attend Historically Black Colleges and has started an online approach to education that is more nurturing than the traditional online university.    Both of these gentlemen were approachable, generous with their time, and charismatic, inspirational speakers.

I listened to a presentation by Stedman Graham (of Oprah fame) and enjoyed his comment about labels.  He said one of the great things about the United States is the freedom we have to decide who we are.  No label can hold us back unless we let it.  What matters is who we believe we are.  Each day we have 24 hours that we can use well or poorly.  How we choose to live during that 24 hours will accumulate to a life of our own choosing, or a life directed by someone else limiting us by giving us a label.  He, Stedman Graham, defines who he is, not by his relationships or his color or his history but rather by who gets up in the morning to a new 24 hours.  He challenged the audience to decide who they want to be and claim themselves.  It's never too late to take ownership and discover the real you.  A fitting ending.
